Advent and Type

Poneglyphs are massive, cubic steles fabricated of a currently unidentified, indestructible type of stone.[5] They have text written in an ancient script carved into them, usually on one of their six sides. In that location are a full of three types of Poneglyphs scattered across the world; Historical Poneglyphs, Instructional Poneglyphs, and Route Poneglyphs:

  • "Historical Poneglyphs" reveal pieces of ancient history, as well as messages written by aboriginal people.
  • "Instructional Poneglyphs" contain instructions and/or clues about the locations of Historical Poneglyphs.[six]
  • Road Poneglyphs (ロード 歴史の本文 ポーネグリフ , Rōdo Pōnegurifu ? , literally meaning "Road Text of History") detail a location. The combined locations detailed by all four Road Poneglyphs allows one to locate Laugh Tale.[7]

Both Historical and Instructional Poneglyphs are a dark-bluish color, while the Road Poneglyphs are a deep ruby-red color.

Overview

The iii types of Poneglyphs, with the Route Poneglyphs and Poneglyphs making up the Rio Poneglyph circled.

Co-ordinate to Tamago, in that location are a full of thirty Poneglyphs in the earth.[viii] Each Historical Poneglyph tells a piece of history long forgotten.[5] This history includes the three Ancient Weapons: Pluton,[9] Poseidon[six] and Uranus.[10] The four Road Poneglyphs each identify a location which form a map leading to the last island in the Grand Line, Laugh Tale. They are sought past several organizations interested in the treasure located on Express joy Tale: two of the Four Emperors, Charlotte Linlin and Kaidou, have each claimed possession of a Road Poneglyph.[11]

Beingness the pinnacle of Wano'southward supreme adroitness past ancient Kozuki stonemasons, the steles are impervious to whatsoever harm, even from explosions.[12]

The Rio Poneglyph ( 真の歴史の本文 リオ・ポーネグリフ , Rio Pōnegurifu ? , literally meaning "True Text of History") is, according to Robin, the message carried by all the Poneglyphs along the Grand Line. It is rumored to incorporate the true history of the world (including the "Void Century" of which research is forbidden).[9] In social club to discover it, i must accept all other passages from the other Poneglyphs with them on their travels.[6] Gol D. Roger seemed to have accomplished this task, according to Rayleigh.[xiii] According to Tamago, the Rio Poneglyph is in fact composed of simply nine Poneglyphs.[8]

In the eyes of the World Authorities, they are dangerous artifacts; notwithstanding, despite the World Authorities declaring the Poneglyphs unsafe because of the weapons, the reality is that the ethics of the fallen Kingdom written on some of the stones are far more unsafe than whatever of the weapons.[5] Gol D. Roger managed to follow the passage of the Poneglyphs considering he could hear "the voice of all things" and thus uncovered the truth of the Void Century with his crew, but Silvers Rayleigh notes that what they learned may exist interpreted differently depending on one's point of view.[xiii]

Cultural Significance

" Proceed thy motives in center, with closed mouth. We are those who will weave history with the ringing of the great belfry. "

Later on they were completed, the stones were left in the care of aboriginal civilizations and protected by the descendants of these civilizations for many generations, equally seen in both Arabasta and Shandora. The Shandorian Poneglyph was a fiercely guarded treasure of the Shandia people, and they felt a deep connexion to it - especially the Golden Bong built effectually it[fifteen] - that was passed downwards to the nowadays era, where the descendants of those who fought and died to protect information technology still put their lives on the line to reclaim it, along with their homeland, even though they had long forgotten about the existence of the Poneglyph itself.[16] They still cherish what it represents a nifty deal. The shaman of their people openly wept upon hearing that they had fulfilled the wishes of their ancestors by passing its information on to Nico Robin, thus relieving them of their centuries-long duty.[6]

Unlike its Shandorian counterpart that was guarded past its people to protect the information it independent, information technology is clear that the subconscious nature of the Arabasta Poneglyph was to conceal its beingness from the people and not to protect it, every bit Arabasta is a founding chapter of the Earth Authorities, united against the creators of the Poneglyph. This is inferred by Robin in her conversation with the King of Arabasta, Nefertari Cobra, when she scoffs at and rebukes his argument about a hereditary charge of the monarchy to "protect" the stone, though he was truthfully unaware of the deeper reasons or motives of its concealment decided long before his time.[17]

The contents of a Poneglyph being copied.

Due to its ties with the Kozuki Family, the Mokomo Dukedom is somewhat knowledgeable almost Poneglyphs despite existence unable to read them, equally they are aware of the beingness of the Road Poneglyphs[vii] and Nekomamushi reveals that information technology is possible to impress a Poneglyph'due south text onto paper in a similar manner to woodblock printing, simultaneously proving that information technology is possible to copy the text written on a Poneglyph and record it on a rubbing of a different material that lacks a Poneglyph'south indestructibility.[18]

Ancient Script

" The words that are casually written here... They're the same script as those on the Poneglyphs. The merely people who knew how to utilize these symbols were the ones who created the Poneglyphs. "

— Robin on the ancient script.[14]

Ancient script written independently from Poneglyphs.

The text on the Poneglyphs is written in an aboriginal script (古代文字 , kodai moji ? ). This writing system was apparently unique to the civilization who carved their history onto the Poneglyphs. Notwithstanding, the aboriginal script was not exclusively used for Poneglyphs, as some ruins in Shandora contained writing in the same script.[14]

Attempting to research this script is deemed a offense by the World Authorities,[19] simply the archaeologists of Ohara led by Professor Clover were able to decipher the ancient script later years of research in secrecy.[5] However, they were later discovered past the Regime and erased by a Buster Call. The sole survivor of this purge was Nico Robin, who had managed to learn the script at the historic period of viii by spying on the squad of archaeologists.[20]

The Kozuki Family were master philologists who created the Poneglyphs and inscribed its linguistic communication. They passed down the noesis of how to read Poneglyphs including the skill to write its ancient language within their family upwards to Kozuki Oden'southward generation. Also a member of Roger'due south crew, Oden journeyed to Laugh Tale with him and, like Roger, could decipher the Rio Poneglyph. Oden was executed past Kaidou and the Shogun of Wano Land Kurozumi Orochi subsequently he refused to tell them a clandestine he knew (presumably either the location of Express mirth Tale, I Piece, knowledge of what was written on the Rio Poneglyph, or how to read Poneglyphs), preventing Oden from passing on the literacy of the Poneglyphs to his children, Kozuki Momonosuke and Kozuki Hiyori, and leaving Robin as the only known individual who can decipher the ancient text.[21]

Record of the Void Century

The Kozuki Family carves text into the Poneglyphs.

800 years agone, in the Wano Country, a clan of principal stonemasons known as the Kozuki Family invented indestructible block shaped steles for the purpose of recording important history on them while preventing it from being destroyed. Those steles would become the Poneglyphs.[three]

The steles were written to preserve the events of the Void Century.[5] After the Void Century concluded, the stones were left in the guardianship of the descendants of ancient civilizations, who guarded them from people seeking to destroy or merits them.[15] [17] The World Government, in an attempt to encompass up the events of the Void Century,[five] made researching and deciphering Poneglyphs a crime punishable past death. However, this did not stop others from gaining possession of Poneglyph knowledge,[xix] transferring the ambiguous language on the Poneglyphs to paper in hopes of finding someone who can read it,[18] or keeping the stones themselves in their own possession in social club to gain superiority over those looking for them.[11]

Gol D. Roger's Effort

39 years before the current storyline, Roger and his crew reached Lodestar Isle at the end of the Grand Line and learned about the existence of the Poneglyphs, prompting them to look for the steles across the world. 13 years afterwards, later on encountering the Whitebeard Pirates, Roger met Kozuki Oden and learned about his knowledge regarding reading the writing on the stones. Roger and then begged Whitebeard to let Oden to join him, and Oden agreed.[33]

At some point, either earlier or after recruiting Oden, Roger managed to copy Big Mom's Road Poneglyph.[34]

" I accept come up here and will pb this passage to the farthest ends of the world. "

Roger'due south message in the ancient linguistic communication carved by Kozuki Oden.

Shortly after Oden joined the coiffure, the Roger Pirates traveled to Skypiea and found the Shandorian Golden Belfry Bell. Oden deciphered the message on the Poneglyph and wrote Roger'south own message abreast it.[vi] [35]

Subsequently leaving Skypiea, the crew traveled to H2o seven, and Roger learned en-route about the Road Poneglyphs at Wano Country and Zou, now having information about all of them, including the copy he had from Big Mom's and a hunch that the Sea Wood near Fish-Man Island held another one. The crew then continued sailing beyond the world and somewhen reached Fish-Homo Island, proving Roger's guess correct every bit they found the Road Poneglyph and learned the truth about Poseidon.

Returning to the New Earth, the crew reached Wano Country and read the Road Poneglyph there. Effectually the aforementioned time, Oden's wife, Toki, became ill and decided to stay in Wano with their children, Momonosuke and Hiyori, and Oden's retainers, allowing Oden to finish his quest.

Arriving at Zou, Roger used a recommendation from Nekomamushi in guild to gain access to the Road Poneglyph in the Whale Tree.

Following the directions, the Roger Pirates drew a course towards the final island, and according to Oden's log, they learned the truth about the Void Century, the Volition of D., and the Aboriginal Weapons. They besides establish the treasure left there past Joy Boy. Upon reaching their destination, the Roger Pirates burst into laughter, causing Roger to name the isle Laugh Tale, as news of his achievement spread throughout the world, earning him the championship of the "Pirate King".[36] [13]

The Demons of Ohara

The researchers on Ohara decided to study their island'south Poneglyph in an attempt to discover the missing history of the world.[19] However, they were limited past lack of access to and knowledge of the other Poneglyphs, and thus sent out researchers to detect more than information on them, knowing the written report of the Poneglyphs was illegal.

Nico Olvia, along with xxx-3 other archaeologists, set out to sea. Sadly, their effort failed and they were intercepted by the Marines, leaving Olvia as the sole survivor. The Marines found information among the belongings of the dead researchers that allowed them to trace the squad dorsum to Ohara, and a CP9 unit was sent to investigate. The World Government had always been wary of the scholars because of their cognition, but researching the Poneglyphs meant they had an excuse to act confronting them.[37]

Olvia escaped the Marines with the help of Jaguar D. Saul[38] and managed to render to Ohara in fourth dimension to warn her comrades about the Marines heading their mode. All the same, CP9 had already arrived on the isle[37] and a Buster Call assail commenced after Clover revealed that he had discovered the knowledge held past the Poneglyph in the Tree of Noesis.[39] Ohara was destroyed, wiping out the entire Island and all of its inhabitants with the exception of Nico Robin, who managed to flee in the process, leaving the fate of the Ohara Poneglyph a mystery.[xx]

During her time on the run, Robin deciphered at least one Poneglyph and constantly strove to find others.[27]

Pekoms convinced Large Mom to reduce the price, but she only went down a decade because she was mad at Pedro for taking Tamago's left eye, so Pedro removed his own left eye and claimed that he had to return to Zou in order to witness the "dawn of this world"; impressed by this, Big Mom took only fifty years off his lifespan.[42] [41]
